Dream of Harmony حلم الانسجام

حلم الانسجام

dream of harmony

Opening Friday 9 February 2024 at 3pm Join us to welcome Luxor Art Gallery's New Mural by Felo Pater Halim "Dream of Harmony حلم الانسجام" as we celebrate our Five Year Anniversary with an

Exhibition including Artists of Luxor :

Alaa Awad Mervat Shazli Hilali Abou El Youn Izabela Uchman Mohamed Ibrahim Katrina Vrebalovich and more...

Luxor Art Gallery is so pleased to showcase the artwork of local talent Felo Pater Halim. Over several years, we have watched him continue to develop his artwork and never cease to be in awe of his sincere passion and serious dedication. He is a true artist, not because he has mastered his skills, but because he continues to develop his styles, to meet new challenges, and evolve ideas for what is possible, always remaining loyal to his heart to create art that speaks to real love: of his land, of his people, of his heritage. Sometimes romantic with ancient Egyptian rhapsody, sometimes bold with a surprise inspiration, Felo is always as kind and genuine as the art he creates. We are very honored to commission his mural diptych at the entrance to Luxor Art Gallery, knowing that he would create something full of welcoming beauty and a “dream of harmony” for all to share. —D.N.

‎"وش مرايا Wesh Maraya"

Ghada Embarek Solo Exhibition
‎"وش مرايا Wesh Maraya" (Double Faced)
Opening Sunday 27 November at 4pm
at Luxor Art Gallery

Reducing the figure to essential form, with colors extracted from the depths of her idiosyncratic vision, Ghada Embarek’s artworks deduct distractions down to essence. Her new collection "وش مراي Wesh Maraya" (Double Faced) features portraits of her fellow Egyptians from a "mirrored" perspective, the inside out, recognition versus dissimulation, nature reflecting soul. Who are we? What are we? Beyond flesh and blood, Ghada delves deep into an interior philosophy that unites us all, seeking the bonding secrets of our humanity. Based in Cairo with family roots in Qena, Ghada was influenced by her world travels early in her artistic career, living in Japan and Singapore. She returned to her home country of Egypt with an enlightend vision that has enriched her fascinating exploration throughout her art. Her paintings, watercolors, and sketches illuminate the auras and mysteries of life, creating peculiar shapes we all can perceive and recognize and feel. —D.N.

IZABELA UCHMAN SOLO EXHIBITION

Opening Sunday 20 March at 4pm

Izabela Uchman Solo Exhibition

"Caryatides كارياتيدات"

(Females Supporting the Universe)

Luxor Art Gallery is so pleased to present the gorgeous and ingenious calligraphic artworks of Izabela Uchman. The study of Islamic calligraphy is its own remarkable history, and Arabic text has never been mere print on a page. Letters and words unravel, come to life, and are liberated into the world like ribbons in the wind. And yet the messages remain. Taking inspiration from artwork made from passages in the Quran and other traditions, Izabela brings to life quotes and poems that are both personal to her and deeply sentimental, spinning the text into imagery to recreate the meanings at the heart of the words. Her feminine identity, and her relationship with mixed cultures and breaking borders creates messages for all humanity and are simply timeless. —D.N.

SONS OF THE MOUNTAIN — Artworks by Alaa Awad

Text by Dominique Navarro — Photo of the artist by Catherine Sayous

Known for his revolutionary murals and epic imagery, Dr. Alaa Awad’s new collection, Sons of the Mountain, is an intimate odyssey of paintings and sketches. Immersing himself in the rural south of Upper Egypt, Alaa’s tableaus of daily life and private portraits are evocative of artwork found in ancient Egyptian tombs.

Alaa takes us on a meandering journey, down timeworn streets to Old Qurna at the foothills of the Theban mountains, and along the Nile with its idle river boats. We wander into cattle markets on cool mornings, where men and animals gather shoulder to shoulder, the air filled with the heated hustle of vital commerce and fraternal handshakes. In the warm shadows of palm trees, we experience the timelessness of Egypt’s famous camel souq: the countless herd of golden dromedaries with their long legs and arching necks standing like majestic royalty, while men huddle in the foreground, swathed in galabia, conducting their contracts with long wooden staffs.

The fellahin congregate throughout Alaa’s artwork, a vision of community and the harmony of village life, working side by side, day to day, century after century, as they always have since time immortal. Like the artwork found in ancient tombs, Alaa Awad shows us not just scenes from daily life, but close up encounters. In personal portraits, he reveals rugged men bound in heavy robes and head scarves exposing sunburnt faces and weathered eyes, noble and proud.

Alaa depicts women in portraits as vibrant individuals, isolated in private spaces. Unlike the men, they are youthful and languid. Regardless of their traditional dress, each woman is bold and confident, self-assured in her beauty, unafraid to confront the viewer with an assertive gaze. They let their hair down unapologetically. They are contemporary, young women living for the promise of tomorrow, but within the ambience of an Egypt whose glorious pharaonic past is still alive in the blood of its people today.

Through Alaa Awad’s depictions of people, in gatherings and festivities, and intimate portraits, he encompasses a message of dignity and charisma. His art speaks of the past and a present which have merged to create a society as timeless as the land, and reminding one how little the Egyptian people have changed over millennia, in their day-to-day lives, and in their glorious spirits.

“9 years ago today, I had a life changing moment in Egypt that was impossible to ignore, so it seems especially fortuitous that today Luxor Art Gallery was featured on National Egyptian Television. Despite my terrible anxiety to be in front of a camera, I hope my enthusiasm and exhausting efforts comes through, to give back to Egypt by supporting a little known art community in Luxor and help present them to an international audience. It's about the incredible artists and a unique community that supports one another to rise above all the challenges we face in the world, whether it is a revolution or a pandemic. By supporting the arts and supporting one another, our entire community grows, locally and globally, our friendships are empowered, and everyone thrives together.” —Dominique Navarro, 4 July 2020

Soul to Soul روح الى روح — Aboelhamd & Flynn Exhibit

Banner Alaa and Brian.jpg

Soul to Soul روح الى روح
Alaa Aboelhamd & Brian Flynn Exhibition
Opening 20 October, Sunday 6pm
at Luxor Art Gallery

Two of Luxor Art Gallery's favorite artists go "Soul to Soul" for this unique exhibition in anticipation of Opera Aida in Luxor.

Alaa Aboelhamd is an elusive, intriguing artist. Like déjà vu, his paintings feel familiar, yet they are rare to encounter and mystifying to experience. A significant, potent painter whose works speaks boldly of the past and the present, Alaa brings a sensibility and benevolence to all his portraits of Egyptian men and women: ethereal beings who are both vulnerable flesh and eternal souls, tied to their histories yet ever living for the future. There is simply a timelessness to his paintings. They are sublime works of art, full of grace, heritage, and hope. We are honored to exhibit his work at Luxor Art Gallery.

Ever a journey, both for the artist and his audience, the artwork of Brian Flynn never ceases to explore fantastic realms and spiritual visions. Using a luminous color palette including gold and silver leaf, he immerses us into palpable, intimate moments between beings, and lush environments that feel like galaxies moving, metal melting, and roots burrowing. Ceaselessly prolific, Brian’s still lifes, landscapes, and especially his figurative compositions are poignant and divine. With his studio in Luxor for over a decade, Brian has found reverie and inspiration in the rural life of the West Bank.
