AHMED ABD EL FATTAH
Ahmed Abd El Fattah Ahmed Abd El Fattah is a gifted and dedicated artist, known best for his portraiture and figurative works, and undaunted by new challenges to his style and the scale of his work. Recent paintings include a massive diptych that looks upward into the weathered face of an elder Egyptian man, his gaze intense and reverent, while in the adjoining image we see his hand holding prayer beads and other pious objects. Ahmed’s bold palette and fearless brushstrokes run throughout all of his work creating a sense of masterful spontaneity. Yet while Ahmed’s male portraits are course and fleshy beneath the burden of thick paint, the Egyptian women in his paintings seem to undulate in their tonal lights and shadows as though relaxing into the languid compositions. Ahmed’s work is unsettling and exciting, confrontational and refreshing. With so much success already in his young career, he is a captivating artist to follow for decades to come and a defining artist for Egypt’s contemporary art scene. —D.N.
