DOMINIQUE NAVARRO
Although I don't have a chance to paint often or enough — and despite all my life's artwork, studio, and home being destroyed in the 2018 wildfires of California — I was inspired to create this little painting, reflecting on my hopes and struggles, my joys and fears. Oddly enough for me, it was a truly spontaneous painting, in which suddenly crocodiles emerged, first one, than the other... I have often struggled with the concept of Egyptian artwork, and how I, as a foreigner, fit into that dialogue. But thanks to Luxor Art Gallery, I have found a true community of artist colleagues that have revived my faith in exploring one's own voice, no matter where they find themselves in the world. Egypt has been a great gift to me, giving me an incredible career and an artistic direction. Like the Nile with its powerful waters, I have been caught in its currents, pulled into its depths, and gratefully submerged. —Dominique Navarro, November 2019
