Dr. Shahir What is a contemporary Egyptian artist? Luxor Art Gallery loves to showcase the unexpected, artists that break stereotypes and expectations. Dr. Shahir Maged Mikhail was born and raised on the North Coast of Egypt, and his soul is as vibrant as an Egyptian sun, gleaming like blue waters and yellow desert sands to create a rainbowed aura in the air around him: he lights up a room and electrifies the night! Since 1993, Dr. Shahir began DJing combining a unique and original assortment of influences — from Nubian to Disco, African Jazz to Funk — that come together to create a thrilling new version of “Egyptian beats.” Using real electronic gear to create more technical complexity and experimentation, he manipulates the sounds further on machines in a spontaneous atmosphere so that the music is never heard the same way twice. His music is best experienced live, on the sea-wind rooftops of Alexandria and in the desert foothills of Thebes (soon insh’allah!), to be transfixed by the sounds and truly live in the moment. —D.N.
