hALA ABU SHADY

Hala Abu Shady     Luxor Art Gallery is excited to present the visionary artworks of Hala Abu Shady. Her original art prepared for our 2022 Tutankhamun Celebration Exhibit is contemporary, captivating, and unique: the photomontage diptych“Tutankhamun’s Cave” beholds golden objects, looming and mysterious within a moody cavernous darkness, capturing a feeling of fresh discovery and awe in a foreboding atmosphere of secrets. “Tutankhamun Seats” tours the audience and spectacle, using humored pop imagery contrasted with dramatic ancient symbolism; the female gaze is stereotyped and glamorous, while a chessboard reminds us to “play on.” Hala is ever thoughtful and inquisitive, and rather than a play-on words, she plays with imagery towards a most sincere objective. Exploring and embracing her feminine identity, “female rites of passage,” and Egyptian society, culture and symbolism throughout her art, she works in unlimited multimedia including installations, photography, film and video, as well as painting, photomontage, and drawing. Based in Cairo where she is a professor in the department of Graphic & Advertising Arts at the Higher Institute of Applied Arts, 6 October, she teaches design, advertising psychology, and media art theory. We look forward to her visionary work and future collaborations with this fascinating artist. —D.N.
