Michael Walek With a gifted knowledge of architecture and light, Michael Walek’s plein-air paintings illuminate his glorious world travels, from his home in New England to Italy and Portugal, and to Egypt where his paintbrush captures the Theban sun in all its glory. His images of ancient Egyptian temples and landscapes realize the harmony and tranquility of ancient pylons beside majestic palm trees, the undulating mountains and glorious pyramids of Giza. There is something about a painting that is created in-situ: one feels the long quiet moment of observance and the transitioning of sun to shadows moving gracefully through the air, through the paintbrush, and into the depths of the paint itself. As timeless and historic as the many painters who came before him to Egypt, Michael’s paintings encapsulate his love of this country in his tender strokes of color.
