mOUSTAFA sAIFOON

Moustafa Saifoon     Dramatic, moody, and sometimes with an undertone of satire, Moustafa Saifoon paints with uninhibited gusto and heavy empasto. His art captures a curious meeting point between the sacred ancients and peculiar present day, highlighted by harsh electric lights enclosed by claustrophobic darkness. In his series of paintings from within an Egyptian museum featuring the divine goddess Sekhmet and other admired antiquities, it is the tourists who are on display, in gawking awe. Moustafa lets us laugh with him, observing from the shadows. Regardless of his often morose humor, his work is distinctive, classical, and an indulgent pleasure. —D.N.
