nGAIRE JOHANSEN

Ngaire Johansen    Egypt often beacons people on a journey they could never foresee. For Australian artist Ngaire Johansen, she emphasizes that Egypt had never called upon her until suddenly her life was transformed a few years ago and she embarked into the unknown, arriving in Luxor last year with little more than some luggage. Now settling into a new world as a resident, she is establishing her art studio with a view on the west bank’s agricultural fields, mountains, and ancient temples. Landscapes captivate Ngaire’s mind, and she explores them throughout her artistic work, dividing and slicing them into geometric patterns inspired by the universe and enigmatic pathways, like her travels through life. Long before she set out for Egypt, or even knew it was in her destiny, she created a sacred Mandala painting with a collage of cutouts of Egyptian motifs. It seemed a premonition she couldn’t comprehend till now. Luxor Art Gallery is excited to see this introspective, thoughtful artist paint the Theban necropolis that surrounds her, her artistic explorations bound to be ever more fascinating and evolving. —D.N.
