SARA EL OKALLY

Sara El Okally     Luxor Art Gallery has had the honor of exhibiting Dr. Sara El Okally’s sculptures in several contemporary art exhibitions in our gallery. Intriguing, powerful, and confidently feminine, Saris as fascinating as the wonderful art she creates. A fine sculptor with an ingenious skill to sculpt in clay gorgeous, intelligent renderings, Sara does not limit herself when it comes to the choice of materials she utilizes to express the message born of the sculptures in her mind’s eye, whether it be bronze, rubber, fiberglass, fabric, or gold. Sara’s animal sculptures are memorable and totally unique: using assorted multi-layered black rubber materials including bike tires, Sara builds up the anatomy, the sensuous tendons and voluptuous muscles, expressing not only the horse’s strength and the gazelle’s gracefulness, but a sense of vigorous movement that the material itself lends to. Using found and recycled materials to reflect on environmental and social concerns is yet another aspect of Sara’s ongoing interest to engage in larger issues beyond simple aesthetics and Egyptian trends, and participate in a global dialogue directly through her art. Born in Qena, Sara divides her time between Cairo and Luxor where she is a sculpture professor at the South Valley University, Faculty of Fine Arts. Luxor Art Gallery has long wanted to exhibit and collaborate with this fascinating artist, and we are thrilled to feature her brilliant sculptures in our 2022 Tutankhamun Celebration Exhibit. —D.N.
